Do you want to work with inspired colleagues to protect nature worldwide? Do you wish to help build the growing movement of partners who contribute to this goal in various ways? That is what you do when you work at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The WWF Dutch Caribbean and partners are looking for a Wastewater expert for an internship on Bonaire, from February/March 2022 for a period of 6-9 months. Part of the internship will take place on Bonaire. 


Background of WWF: the host organization for this research

WWF is an international organization for the protection of nature with the mission to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. The organization has independent offices in around 100 countries in the world forming a global network. There is a common worldwide strategy that focuses on the conservation of the biodiversity on the planet and the reduction of the global footprint to a level that is within the limits of the earth.  WWF looks for solutions in cooperation with governments, companies and civil society to realize protection of species and their habitats and a sustainable use of environmental resources.


The internship: background and activities

The Dutch Caribbean is one of the focus areas of WWF-NL. One project focuses on better water management. Water Circles is a project in which het Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire (OLB), STINAPA, Water- en Energiebedrijf Bonaire, Fundashon Mariadal, Water Alliance and WWF-NL work together to look for solutions for one of the most important stress factors for Coral Reefs: wastewater. The project is taking place on Bonaire. The WWF Dutch Caribbean team is looking for a (Master)student with expertise (HBO/UNIV) in wastewater management, recycling of wastewater and relevant techniques.

The student will help the consortium with:

  • a desk study; innovative but proven technology for decentralized wastewater purification systems that are or could be applied in a tropical environment
  • help develop and execute the project team in developing 5 pilot projects on Bonaire
  • help the water experts in the project team with answering questions to upcoming issues during the project
  • connect with (overseas) companies and consultancy firms (e.g. Royal Haskoning) and help making business cases for the chosen pilots
  • connect with Univ/HBO experts in NL who could apply their expertise to the project team and specific problems (e.g. purifying salty wastewater)
  • provide an overview with pros and cons of the available techniques, including budgets


  • Literature review
  • Interviewing experts (busines as well as University) building business cases
  • Develop projects
  • Evaluate techniques
  • Cooperate in a team and work with external experts


Who are we looking for?

  • You're master student or student in the last year of their bachelor with the described experience in the field
  • You're able to work independently, but you also describe yourself as a team player
  • You have a hands-on attitude
  • Preferably, you have experience in project management
  • You're fluent in English & Dutch (strong preference for fluency in Papiamentu)

An engaging, educational intership in a cooperative team. You will receive an allowance of €270,- per month on a full-time basis. WWF is a professional and dynamic organisation with an informal character. Part of the intership will take place on Bonaire.
