Intern Environmental and Social Safeguards framework

Zeist Master € 270

WWF-NL is looking for an intern assisting in the implementation of an Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework, starting February for a period of 3 to 4 months.

Background of the Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework

To promote the respect of human rights in the context of its work, WWF is implementing an Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF). This framework establishes a common set of standards, policies, planning and implementation mechanisms, as well as compliance systems that govern how activities on-the-ground are carried out.

Safeguards are designed to avoid and mitigate potential social and environmental impacts, uphold human rights, and ensure conservation projects deliver better outcomes for communities and nature. We apply safeguards in the design, implementation, and monitoring of all of our activities. Safeguards contribute to the goal of achieving our inclusive conservation approaches that are centered around equity, that foster communities’ empowerment and agency in decision making, and support stronger partnerships.

A crucial pillar of the Safeguards framework is strengthening the capacities of WWF staff and partners on human rights and inclusive conservation. The ESSF process requires a thorough documentation of different aspects of the work, not only for compliance purposes, but mainly to ensure that information is shared in a timely and adequate manner with the relevant stakeholders, in particular local communities, that the inputs gathered are fully considered and that the relevant documentation is safely managed and shared in a safe and appropriate manner. An improved documentation process can not only help to deliver better outcomes, but also facilitate the ongoing learning process.

The internship

The internship will support this by: 1) the organization and implementation of a training, including the development of tools; and 2) the development of a proposal to improve the documentation of the ESSF process, including the project review and stakeholder consultation. Working in a friendly and encouraging setting, the intern will be able to get a first hand perspective of how safeguards are applied in conservation and the dilemmas and opportunities of promoting inclusive conservation in challenging contexts.

Activities

  • Collaborate in the development, the logistics and the notes of a training on ESSF to take place end of February next year.
  • Research about a study case on the contribution of safeguards to conservation outcomes.
  • Help in the systematization of the documentation related to safeguards assessments of projects.
  • Propose alternatives to better document the stakeholder consultation processes.

Student profile

  • Master’s studies in social or human rights or any other relevant studies
  • Background, interest or affinity with the topics
  • Excellent spoken and written fluency in English, knowledge of French or Spanish are a plus
  • Ability to work independently and proactively

Period

3 to 4 months starting in February, based in the Netherlands
